Fixing a Tattoo Blow Out
Tattoo blow outs aren’t fun! You get your new tattoo, and it looks amazing. Then, a few days later, you notice something weird: the ink has spread beyond its original boundaries. What happened? How can you fix it? We're going to answer all of these questions (and more) in this post.
What is it?
A blow out is a tattoo that has been overworked. The skin becomes inflamed and the color of the tattoo can look uneven or smudged. The most common symptoms are redness, swelling, and mild to severe itching. If left untreated, additional problems may arise like infection or scarring.
Blow outs often occur when an artist uses too much ink or pushes too hard during the process of tattooing which can cause excess bleeding under the skin's surface. Another reason for a blow out is if you don't care for your tattoo properly after getting one done; this includes picking or scratching at loose scabs instead of waiting until they fall off naturally on their own, using moisturizer that clogs your pores rather than using Dr Pickles Tattoo Balm, and failing to keep your tattoo clean.

Why do they happen?
Tattooing is a process that requires precision, but it’s also an art that relies on the skill and experience of the artist. Too much pressure or over-inked lines can cause a blowout to happen during tattooing. Other common reasons for this unfortunate occurrence include:
- The artist might be using the wrong needle size for their work;
- The artist may not have chosen high quality ink;
- The artist might be applying unnecessary pressure when inking up your skin-which can result in tearing of your skin (which we don't want).
How to fix a blow out?
If your tattoo is still not healing, you should consult with a doctor.
If the tattoo is large and you can’t wait until it heals on its own, use Dr Pickles Tattoo Film to cover the area so that it doesn’t get dirty or infected.
Keep it clean with Dr Pickles Foaming Tattoo Wash up to 2-3 times per day.
You should also apply Dr Pickles Tattoo Balm to promote faster healing by keeping your skin moist.
How can you avoid them?
Avoiding aftercare issues is as simple as following the instructions of your tattoo artist. If you’re not sure what to expect, ask them! They should be able to guide you through the process and let you know any precautions that may need taking while your tattoo is healing.
When it comes to picking at scabs or otherwise messing with your skin, it’s best to leave well enough alone unless instructed otherwise by your artist. Some people are tempted by the idea of “picking off” their tattoos in order to see what it looks like underneath; however, doing so can lead directly to infection and other complications that could cause permanent damage—even if you think there isn't anything wrong yet!
Lastly but most importantly: try to choose an artist that uses good quality ink when getting a new tattoo! While high-end brands may cost more upfront, they're usually worth every penny in terms of quality control and consistency between batches (which means fewer problems later on down the road).
